A Venetian Plaster finish can range from
a glass-like, high gloss, marble Veneciano
to a combination of matte & smooth Marmarino
to a rough, matted Tuscan or Terra finish.
The plaster is first tinted with synthetic
pigments, stirred vigorously and then applied
by trowel. The first layer is applied as
a single skim coat and then covered with
translucent layers of plaster.
The number of layers determines the finish and dimension desired. Surface hardening
takes place for a few days as the plaster absorbs carbondioxide from the air.
A Venetian Plaster surface is literally a layer of stone on your wall more durable
than drywall and less than an 1/8th of an inch thick.
Walls covered with decorative, Italian Plasters will not knick like wallpaper
or drywall. Color combinations are endless and can range from Venetian reds, terracotta's,
provencal blues, sandy marble, rich ivories, pale greens to white and evokes a
sense of Mediterranean history yet remaining startling contemporary.
The plasters are lime based, mixed with marble dust preventing dust mites from
burrowing into the walls creating an allergy free environment. The colors of Venetian
Plasters do not fade and are guaranteed for 10-15 years.
A Venetian Plaster finish is a high-end alternative to ordinary paint, faux finishes
or wall coverings. Venetian Plaster is not to be mistaken for ordinary plaster
or joint compound. It is a lime putty and contains finely ground limestone and
marble dust which allows the plaster to be applied as thin as
paint and translucent enough to allow each layer to show through. It is actually
very thin layers of venetian plaster applied to your walls by hand which creates
the desired effect.
The technique was adopted by the ancient Venetians as an alternative to using
heavy stone and
marble. A Venetian Plaster finish can range in sheen and texture from a smooth,
highly polished, marble-like finish to a distressed, stone-like, Tuscan appearance
with multiple color washes to get
the desired effect and color combination. Color combinations are endless and range
from Venetian reds, terracotta's, Provencal blues, sandy marble, rich ivories,
yellow ochres, pale greens to white and evoke a sense of the Mediterranean yet
remaining startling contemporary.
The application process is very labor intensive and surprising very clean. Upon
completion of the final translucent layer, the venetian plaster fully hardens
by allowing oxygen to penetrate for a few days. The result is an actual layer
of stone applied to your wall which is less than an 1/8th of an inch thick. Once
sealed, your Venetian Plaster finish will not fade and actually gets better with
age. It is also mold and mildew resistant.
Venetian Plaster is truly a work of art !
